Dear Parents,
What a wonderful first week I had at Neuse Charter School! I appreciate all your kindness and hospitality. It has been wonderful getting to know the students…they are certainly a terrific group of children! I look forward to a very exciting and successful year with your child.
This week in Language Arts both classes will be working on procedural/how to texts. Included in this category are recipes and following written directions. The students are responsible for being able to read and comprehend these types of texts and throughout the week the class will learn additional strategies to ensure understanding when reading these types of passages. This “real world” unit is both fun and informative.
After completing the procedural unit I would like for the students to have some hands on experience (and fun) by reading directions and completing various recipes (no bake) and crafts in preparation for the holiday. We will begin this early next week. I am in the process of composing a list of needs for the projects and will send that home (and post it here) no later than Wednesday. Any items you can donate from the list will be greatly appreciated. Also if you have a craft in mind that our class could do with few supplies please send a note, email or call me. I am in constant search of cool hands on ideas for the class! I would also love to have your help! If you would like to volunteer to work at one of the “stations” next week please let me know so I can plan activity difficulty levels around the amount of parent volunteers. Mrs. Okay will be working with us too so we will be having stations in both classrooms for the students to complete and enjoy!

Monday- Read the article and answer the comprehension questions
Tuesday- Reread the article and complete the graphic organizer
Wednesday- Research the writing portion at the bottom of the sheet in the technology lab and take notes when researching: Complete the writing assignment Wednesday at home based on your research
Thursday- Read the article and the writing assignment to a parent. Have the parent sign the someplace on the front of your sheet acknowledging completion of the assignments.
Friday- Return the completed worksheet and writing assignment to Mrs. Smith
