Mrs. Okey's Homeroom
This week we will be reading a biography entitled Marven and the Great North Woods. We will be reviewing the concepts of facts and opinions as well as the main idea through this story. Please ensure your child reads this story at home as well. The class will have a vocabulary and comprehension test Friday. Our class will also continue to work on building knowledge and vocabulary through EOG prep passages.
This week's vocabulary:
Vocabulary
Cord- measure of quantity for cut wood, equal to 128 cubic feet.
Dismay- sudden helpless fear of what is about to happen or what has happened
Grizzly- a large, gray or brownish bear in western North America
Immense- vey large,huge; vast
Payroll- list of persons to be paid and the amount that each one is to receive
Lumberjack- person whose work is cutting down trees
Silhouettes- dark images outlined against a lighter background
Homework
Tuesday -Read Marven and the Great North Woods: write a reflection about the story on your reading log
Wednesday- Read Marven and the Great North Woods to an adult: Write a summary using the Main Idea questions (who, did what, where, when, why)
Thursday- Reading log and study for your test tomorrow
Mrs. Smith's Homeroom
Today the students worked on finding the main idea and supporting details using nonfiction passages. This is an important and ongoing concept.
Beginning tomorrow we will transition once again to novel studies. I will give the students their novel and vocabulary and they will have approximately two weeks to complete these. They will be given some class time but I will also meet with each group to set benchmarks toward completion since to help with time management.
